Statement from Nevada AFL-CIO Executive Secretary-Treasurer on the Passing of Richard Trumka

Las Vegas, Nev. — Today, long-time President of the AFL-CIO, Richard Trumka, passed away. In remembrance, Executive Secretary-Treasurer Rusty McAllister released the following statement on behalf of the leadership of the Nevada State AFL-CIO:

"President Richard Trumka devoted his life to bettering the lives of others. He never wavered in the fight for working people—always putting the needs of his union brothers and sisters at the forefront of his work. I had the honor and privilege of working with President Trumka and learning from him. 

His work of lifting up the voices and securing the dignity of working Americans, was more than just work to President Trumka — it was an integral part of who he was. Working Americans, and our brothers and sisters here in Nevada, owe President Trumka a debt of gratitude that we will never be able to repay and that we will never forget. 

President Trumka’s devotion to the labor movement sparked a flame in all of us, and we must now recommit ourselves to his mission of delivering respect, greater wages and better benefits for working people — union and nonunion alike. While we mourn this devastating loss of our brother in this movement, we must also continue his work to create a better future for working families here in Nevada and across the country. We must keep the flame of the labor movement alive in his honor."
