Nevada's Working People Propel Pro-Worker Candidates to Victory in Primary Election

Statement by Nevada State AFL-CIO Executive Secretary-Treasurer Rusty McAllister

Nevada voters chose a future that prioritizes good jobs, strong public schools, affordable housing, universal access to health care and equality for all in yesterday’s primary election. Nevada’s unions are more committed than ever to ensuring the American Dream is available to all. Union volunteers mobilized to help elect pro-worker candidates, and our momentum will keep growing as we gear up for the general election in November. Through unity and independence, the labor movement is an electoral force for the agenda of Nevada's working families.

We congratulate Nevada State AFL-CIO endorsed candidate, Steve Sisolak, as he moves forward in the governor’s race. We will work hard in the coming months to ensure he is elected Nevada's next governor. In addition, the road to flipping Congress runs through Nevada, and we’re proud to continue supporting Steven Horsford as our next representative in CD4.

We also congratulate all other candidates who ran on a pro-worker platform, especially our union member candidates who’ve chosen to take their commitment to working family issues into public service. In the weeks leading up to the election, union members hit the phones and the doors to support labor-endorsed IBEW member Jennie Sherwood in AD2, Teamster Susan Martinez in AD12, and Sarah Peters in AD24. Their wins prove that the labor movement’s passion and resources can make the difference for candidates who embrace a working family agenda.

From now until November, the Nevada State AFL‑CIO will keep mobilizing working people to educate and register voters, to leaflet worksites, and to turn out the vote for working family candidates so we can elect strong leaders who will fight for the priorities of Nevada's working families.
