Las Vegas, Nev. — On Sunday, September 19, 2021, the family of Former Nevada Democratic Congressman James Bilbray announced he had passed away at age 83. A defender of working Nevadans, Bilbray served the state in the House of Representatives for four terms.  Susie Martinez, the Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Nevada State AFL-CIO, released the following statement to honor his legacy and commitment to working families in the state:

“James Bilbray had many titles: Congressman, State Senator, husband, father, leader, friend, and champion for Nevada’s working families. He forever changed our state for the better and will be sorely missed — not only by those who knew him personally but also by those whose lives were touched by his fierce advocacy for our state.

Working people in Nevada owe him a world of gratitude for his staunch support of our unions and the labor movement at large. During his time in office, he held a 100 percent voting record in favor of working people. Our movement is better for having his support, and we will always hold him close to our hearts as we continue our work to fight for the rights of workers.

My heart is with the Bilbray family as they mourn this monumental loss. I hope they can find solace in knowing that he dedicated his years on earth to the betterment of others and that his memory will live on in all of us.”
