Executive Secretary Treasurer Susie Martinez:
It is hard to imagine that one year has passed since my election as the Executive Secretary Treasurer of the Nevada State AFL-CIO. People have asked, “What’s your story? Why does the labor movement mean so much to you?”
My parents immigrated from Mexico and took a very difficult path to a country that they did not know and a language they did not speak. They sacrificed so much to give their daughters a better life and more importantly, an opportunity to achieve the American Dream. They instilled in me the value of hard work and to never giving up no matter the obstacles that may come.
When I first became a union member, I didn’t understand the significance of what it meant to be a union member. I remember my dad being incredibly proud when he found out that his daughter secured a union job at the Flamingo as a front desk agent and member of Teamsters Local 986. He was proud because he understood that a union job was the greatest tool to secure a better future for me and my family. As a Teamster for over 30 years, I was able to provide for my daughter as a single mom through my union job and ensure that she had the resources that she needed to succeed. It is because of the labor movement that inspired me to run for office as the Assemblywoman for District 12 and eventually, as the Executive Secretary Treasurer of the Nevada State AFL-CIO.
I say all this because it’s not just about the leaders. It’s about the members. It’s about those who came before us and those who will eventually succeed us in the next generation.
Someone fought for me 35 years ago and that’s why I will always fight for the current and future generation of union members. That is my story. That is why I’m here.
Thank you for your confidence in me and I look forward to continuing our work in moving the labor movement forward.
- Susie
